Independent production giant Fremantle revealed today Art wakes upthe first original AI production from Fremantle’s new AI production company Imaginae Studios.
The short educational TV series uses generative artificial intelligence to transport viewers into the inner worlds of the most famous paintings in history. Over the course of six episodes, the series literally delves into some of the most famous artistic masterpieces of the past five centuries, from Jan van Eyck’s “Portrait of the Arnolfini” to James McNeil Whistler’s “Whistler’s Mother”; From Vincent Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” to Hokusai’s “The Great Wave”; And “The Scream” by Edvard Munch to “Nighthawks” by Edward Hopper. Each episode uses AI technology to animate the original artwork, creating a world within the painting to explore the emotional history and narrative behind each masterpiece.
Imagine created the series in collaboration with award-winning Spanish AI filmmaker Hilario Abad.
James Duffin, CEO of Imaginae Studios, said the project demonstrates how generative AI can be “applied with flair, craft and cultural sensitivity” to tell stories “that were previously impossible” while remaining rooted in artistic craft and cultural integrity.
Andrea Scrosati, group chief operating officer and CEO of Continental Europe at Fremantle, said the series embodies Imaginae’s goal of giving “new creative talent the space to experiment and the freedom to realize bold ideas using amazing AI tools.”
The series launches on YouTube today. Fremantle said it would provide further launch and distribution details in the coming months.
Fremantle launched its independent AI label last year pledging to “produce groundbreaking content” using AI tools while “adhering to the most stringent intellectual property and compliance standards”.
As a producer of some of the world’s most successful television formats, including… Got talent, American Idoland Factor XFremantle is keen to stress that it views artificial intelligence as a complement to traditional television production, not a replacement for it. The company is keen to avoid the kind of industry backlash seen with other AI projects in production, such as that seen with “AI actress” Tilly Norwood created by London-based production company Particle6 and AI talent studio Xicoia.
