The Center has announced a big change for highway users, as cash payment at toll plazas is set to stop from April 10. The move, notified by the Ministry of Road Transport, aims to reduce long queues at toll gates and make travel on highways smoother for passengers.
No more cash payments on the highway: here’s how to pay
With this transformation, toll payments will become fully digital across national highways. Vehicles will primarily need a valid FASTag to pass through toll plazas. In cases where FASTag is not available, users can still pay via UPI, but at a higher cost: 1.25 times the standard toll fee. Authorities also warned that vehicles without a valid payment may be denied entry or removed from the highway, according to current rules. The decision is part of a broader drive by the National Highways Authority of India to move to a fully electronic toll collection system.

The government is also addressing abuse of fee exemptions. Instead of allowing motorists to show ID at kiosks, eligible users will now need “exempt FASTaged tags.” Others can opt for an annual FASTag card priced at Rs 3,075, which allows private vehicles to cross up to 200 toll plazas. In addition, if toll fees remain unpaid, the authorities can issue an electronic notice. Failure to pay dues within three days may result in a penalty doubling the fee amount.Stay tuned to TOI Auto for latest updates on the automobile sector and follow us on our social media on Facebook, Instagram and X.
