Researchers have identified three previously unknown species of ruffian beetles in Arunachal Pradesh, highlighting the state’s vast insect diversity that remains unexplored.

Three unknown species of roaming beetles have been identified in the forest of Arunachal Pradesh.

The study, recently published in the journal Soil Organisms, documented three new species under the genus Megalopinus – Megalopinus arunachalensis, Megalopinus mithun, and Megalopinus micros.

The findings were the result of a collaborative study conducted by scientists from the Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) in Dowimukh near Itanagar, and the University of Tübingen in Germany.

The research team included Hiren Gogoi, Tagam Doppiam and Sonu Singh from Robert Gordon University, along with Professor Oliver Betz and Tobias Minda from the German University.

According to the study, the newly described species is found in forest ecosystems, especially in decaying wood and wet leaf litter.

Specimens have been recorded at ecologically important sites such as Pak Tai Tiger Reserve and Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, both known for their rich biodiversity.

The researchers stressed that the fragile habitats in these areas require sustained efforts to preserve them.

The study also noted that Arunachal Pradesh remains one of the least explored regions for insect diversity, suggesting that continued scientific exploration could reveal many previously unknown species.

Documenting such organisms is crucial to understanding ecosystem dynamics and promoting biodiversity conservation in the eastern Himalayan region, the researchers said.

The research paper was made available online on April 1.

Reacting to the discovery, Deputy Prime Minister Chuna Min said the finding once again demonstrates the state’s extraordinary natural wealth.

“The discovery of a new species of ruff beetle in our forest ecosystems is another example of Arunachal’s exceptional biodiversity. These beetles, which belong to the Staphylinidae family, play an important role as natural predators and decomposers,” Min said in a post on X.

The Deputy Prime Minister added that such discoveries underscore the importance of protecting virgin forests in the state.

“Every new discovery reminds us of the urgent need to conserve the ecosystems of Arunachal, which harbor many rare and unique species,” he said.
