A two-judge bench, Justices JG Muneer and Tarun Saxena, passed the order after hearing a petition filed by a person named Harshit Sharma and two others, seeking quashing of the FIR registered against them in Mathura.

In the order passed on March 31, the court said that even if the prefix “His Excellency” is described inappropriately by the first informant, it is the duty of the police to adhere to the protocol by inserting the honorific prefix while writing the FIR.

Fixing April 6 for the next hearing, the court said, “The Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Government of Uttar Pradesh, will explain in his affidavit why the Hon’ble Union Minister, whose name appears in the FIR, was not described with the usual honorific of the Honble and, at one point, was referred to only by his name without even appending the word ‘Mr.’”

She added that even if the minister was described inappropriately in the report written by the first informant, while writing the FIR, it was the duty of the police to adhere to the protocol by inserting the word honour, which may be in parentheses.
