Shri Thanedhar came under severe criticism for his comment on birthright citizenship.
MP Shri Thanedhar was fiercely criticized and made responsible for the suicide of his first wife after he expressed interest in the Supreme Court hearing on birthright citizenship. Thanedar said the hearing was very personal for him because he came to the United States as an immigrant.
But he was attacked based on unfounded allegations, with one social media user holding him responsible for his first wife’s suicide. “As an immigrant, today’s arguments about birthright citizenship are deeply personal to me. The Fourteenth Amendment is clear: Children of immigrants are guaranteed U.S. citizenship. Despite President Trump’s wishes, he cannot rewrite the Constitution,” Tanedar wrote.

Birthright citizenship states that people born in the United States are Americans, regardless of the legal status of their parents.
President Donald Trump wants to end this agreement and the Supreme Court is hearing arguments regarding it.
Shri Tanedhar did not obtain citizenship by birth because he was not born in the United States. He immigrated to the United States on a student visa, but when he expressed interest in the Supreme Court’s arguments, he was harshly criticized. “You married a naturalized citizen to get a green card and then drove that woman to suicide by downing an entire bottle of antidepressants.
“You then used your legal status to open a biological lab in New Jersey where you tortured and killed innocent animals while defrauding investors,” one wrote. “You should be stripped of your citizenship, deported, and your entire lineage banned from setting foot in America,” the troll wrote.
Who was Shri Thanedar’s first wife?
Shri Thanedar’s first wife was Shamal Thanedar, a neurologist and father of two, who committed suicide in 1996 at the age of 37 due to an overdose of anti-depressant pills.
At the time, they were living in St. Louis. Their children were 4 and 8 years old at the time. Shri Tanidhar said that his wife hid her struggle with depression from him, and he was psychologically traumatized by her death. In 2024, Thanedar produced and starred in a short film called “Dear Bra” which revolves around Shamal’s suicide.
Shamal was also an immigrant from India and there is no evidence that she was a naturalized citizen when she married Thanedar. Thanedar married Shamal in 1984 and became a naturalized US citizen in 1988. After Shamal’s death, Thanedar married his current wife, Shashi, in 1999.
