From location to logistics: Challenges to Donald Trump’s Kharg Island ‘seize’ threat

The crucial oil lifeline

Kharg Island, located in the Persian Gulf, handles nearly 90 percent of Iran’s crude oil exports, making it a vital node in the country’s economy. Its deep waters allow large oil tankers to dock, something much of Iran’s shallow coast cannot support, ensuring steady shipments, most of them bound for China, the New York Times reported.

Any disruption to the island’s operations would significantly limit Iran’s export capacity and restrict global oil supplies, especially as energy markets remain volatile amid tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.

Military risks and operational obstacles

Despite its strategic importance, analysts say capturing and holding Kharg Island would be very difficult. The island is located about 33 kilometers from the Iranian mainland, putting any occupying force within range of Iranian missiles, drones and artillery.Michael Eisenstadt, a former US military analyst, warned against deploying troops on the ground. “On the other hand, you are putting your forces at risk,” he said, according to what was reported by the Associated Press.

“It’s not far from the mainland. So they could probably rain down a lot of destruction on the island, if they were willing to damage their infrastructure.”The short distance from the mainland would also limit response time against incoming threats, while the terrain along the Iranian coast may make it difficult to detect low-flying drones and missiles.

Risks of escalation and limited influence

Experts warn that such a move could lead to widespread reprisals across the region.

The Associated Press reports that Iran and allied groups could intensify attacks on U.S. bases, target infrastructure in the Gulf, or disrupt shipping routes, including through mining operations in the Strait of Hormuz.Danny Citrinovic, an expert on Iranian affairs, said seizing the island may not lead to decisive leverage. “It will be difficult to bear. It will be difficult to withstand,” he said, adding: “It is by no means a decisive blow.”While control of Kharg Island could provide some negotiating power, analysts say it is unlikely to force Tehran to make major concessions, given its ability to maintain limited exports through alternative channels.

Alternatives to ground work

Some experts believe that a naval blockade targeting Iranian oil shipments could achieve similar goals with less risk. Such a strategy could restrict exports without exposing US forces to direct ground combat, the Associated Press reported.“Introduce a quarantine that seeks to seize Iranian oil shipments exiting the Gulf,” said Clayton Siegel, an energy security expert, noting that it could be imposed at a safer distance from Iran’s weapons systems.Trump himself has indicated uncertainty about the potential operation. “Maybe we take over Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options,” he said, adding that such a move “also means we have to be there for a while.”

Global economic impacts

Any escalation involving Kharg Island could have far-reaching consequences beyond the battlefield. Disabling Iran’s main export terminal could remove large amounts of oil from global markets, pushing prices higher and increasing pressure on the already fragile global economy. As tensions rise, Kharg Island emerges as a strategic prize and a potential flashpoint, a point that could shape not only the conflict but also global energy dynamics.
