Before the long-awaited Harry Potter TV series arrives, there’s no better time to revisit the saga that defined an entire generation. Eight movies, seven years of school, adventure, friendship, prophecies, and more. This Harry Potter plot summary covers all the great friendships, losses, magic, and the moment Voldemort finally fell. Let’s go back to the beginning.

“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”

Harry Potter grows up sleeping in a cupboard under the stairs, unwanted and neglected, until Hagrid arrives on his eleventh birthday with a letter and a truth that changes everything. He’s a wizard, his parents were killed by Voldemort, and he somehow survived it all with just a scar. At Hogwarts, he found his first real home, was sorted into Gryffindor, befriended Ron and Hermione, and discovered a natural talent for Quidditch. But the real threat this year is closer than anyone imagines. The Sorcerer’s Stone, capable of granting immortality, is hiding in the school, and someone wants it. Harry assumes it is the cold and hostile Professor Snape. It’s actually the shy Professor Quirrell, with Voldemort hiding in the back of his head. Harry defeats him through his mother’s sacrificial magic, a protection built on a love that Voldemort, then and always, could never understand.

“Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”

Mystery surrounds Harry’s second year when the students turn to stone. A hidden room beneath the school, sealed centuries ago by its founder Salazar Slytherin, reopens. Suspicions fall on Harry when it is revealed that he can speak the snake language Parseltongue. The real culprit is Tom Riddle, a memory preserved in the magical diary of the boy who once taught at Hogwarts. The name Riddle is rearranged to spell “I am Lord Voldemort.” He’s the same younger Voldemort. Harry destroys the diary, kills the basilisk (the creature that kills and paralyzes the students), rescues Ron’s sister Ginny, and inadvertently destroys the first Horcrux.

“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”

Sirius Black, imprisoned for murder, escapes from Azkaban. Everyone assumes he’s stalking Harry, but the truth is more complicated. Sirius was Harry’s father, James’s best friend, and his legal guardian. The actual traitor was Peter Pettigrew, who faked his own death and spent twelve years disguised as Ron’s pet mouse. Although Harry briefly obtains a godfather and the promise of a family, Pettigrew escapes, Sirius is captured again, and escapes aboard the Hippogriff. Harry experiences his first taste of true family connection, but loses it again.

“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”

The prestigious Triwizard Tournament brings three magical schools to Hogwarts. Harry’s name inexplicably appears from the Goblet of Fire, obligating him to compete despite never having entered. The tournament’s three deadly tasks push Harry to his limits. In the final quest, Harry and fellow hero Cedric Diggory reach the Grail together, which is actually a key to the tomb. Cedric was killed instantly. Peter Pettigrew uses Harry’s blood in a dark ritual to resurrect Voldemort in a physical body for the first time in thirteen years. Harry barely escapes when his wand and Voldemort’s wand create a magical deadlock. Harry discovers that Dumbledore leads a secret resistance group called the Order of the Phoenix. Frustrated by Umbridge’s restrictions, Harry forms Dumbledore’s Army to train students in actual defensive magic, finding unexpected allies in Neville Longbottom and Luna Lovegood. Harry’s vision leads to the Department of Mysteries, where Death Eaters ambushed him and his friends. Dumbledore begins private lessons with Harry, exploring the memories of young Tom Riddle to understand Voldemort’s immortality. Dumbledore retrieves the Slytherin ring from the cave but is weakened by a fatal curse. Draco Malfoy and his Eaters infiltrate Hogwarts. With Dumbledore gone and Voldemort rising, Harry, Ron, and Hermione abandon Hogwarts to hunt Horcruxes. They spend months on the run, and the Horcrux necklace they carry poisons their friendship. Ron leaves temporarily but returns and destroys the necklace. They discover the legend of the Deathly Hallows – three legendary objects: the Ancient Staff, the Resurrection Stone, and the Invisibility Cloak – which are said to make one the Master of Destiny. They were captured at Malfoy Manor, and were rescued by Dobby, the house elf, who sacrificed himself to protect them. Voldemort recovers the ancient wand from Dumbledore’s grave, and its power increases.

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part Two”

Harry and his friends break into Gringotts with the help of goblins, and steal Hufflepuff’s Horcrux Cup. They discover Nagini, Voldemort’s snake, who is also a Horcrux, and the last Horcrux remaining at Hogwarts. As the Battle of Hogwarts breaks out, Harry destroys Ravenclaw’s wreath while Ron and Hermione destroy the Grail. Fred Weasley, Lupine, and Tonks are among those lost in the battle. As he lies dying, Snape reveals his true identity: an agent of Dumbledore who has loved Harry’s mother, Lily, all his life. Harry learns that he is accidentally a Horcrux, and he must sacrifice himself to completely defeat Voldemort. Harry goes to his end, and survives through the power of the Hallows. In the final confrontation, Voldemort’s curse returns once again. Neville destroys Nagini, defeating Voldemort forever. Nineteen years later, Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione sent their children to Hogwarts from Platform 9¾. The lightning bolt scar hasn’t hurt in years.
