Twenty years after the end Laguna BeachLauren Conrad, Stephen Colletti, and Kristin Cavallari have an unconventional high school reunion.
The three stars – who broke out on the reality show in the early 2000s following teenagers in their Southern California beach town – are back together for Reunion: Laguna Beacha Roku special that unites much of the original cast to reflect on high school drama and heal old wounds.
This came together after the success of Colletti and Cavallari’s podcast rewatch back to beach, As each of the cast members came to attend one of the episodes, the desire to bring everyone together in one place began. Conrad admits she needed some convincing, since she’s largely lived an off-camera life since leaving Hills In 2009.
“I had a lot of questions, [Colletti and I] Had some conversations about it. I wanted to make sure that if we did this, we would need a reason to do it – how would this be different from anything we had ever done? She said Hollywood Reporter In the special premiere on Thursday. “I wanted to make sure that we felt like we did it the right way, as we wanted this show to be positive, nostalgic, and warmer because that’s what this collection represents.”
It also helped that Conrad, Colletti, and Cavallari served as executive producers, as original show creator Liz Gately, who also returned for the special, recognized that it was important “that they had a voice in what it became and what it was going to look like. We had some quick rules of not manipulating the reactions and all that, but they were very involved, very hands-on.”
Colletti emphasized that this is “an important matter for both of them.” [Conrad and I] That we would get some creative control and tell our story about this experience.
However, don’t expect this to be Conrad’s big return to the spotlight, as she confirmed: “I think this is the last time I interact with the cameras” and the special did not spark any desire to return to reality TV: “I missed all the people but I didn’t miss the cameras.”
Laguna BeachAnd its subsequent branch Hillsbegan its three-year run as one of the first major reality shows. Since the genre has evolved radically over the past two decades, its stars are certain that it could not be produced today.
“I don’t think it’s going to be good, I think it’s going to be too boring. Everything is so fast-paced now, you need more stakes, more drama today,” Cavallari noted. “That’s what was so beautiful about it, there was a real innocence to it. At the time, it was something we had never seen before and everything we had been through was really relatable. We just happened to have such a beautiful backdrop with Laguna Beach.” “I don’t think it’ll even have a pilot. People will say, ‘Nothing happens on this show, there’s nothing going on,'” she added jokingly.
Conrad also noted the social media element and the fact that “a lot of people now would do a reality show in order to launch a brand and build a business; we didn’t do that. We did that show because we were 18 and it seemed fun to be on a TV show.”
That spirit was important to the reunion as well, Colletti said, as “there was something very innocent about that moment and I think for… Laguna For the purposes of this cast, if we tried to do a multi-episode arc again, I’m afraid it would do something to the original. I think doing a quick private, in and out, is perfect for the show.
Reunion: Laguna Beach It begins streaming April 10 on The Roku Channel.
