Petrol and diesel prices in India remained unchanged on Friday, March 27, despite the government’s decision to reduce customs duties. The central government, in an order issued on Thursday, reduced the special surcharge on diesel and petrol to $1.5 billion $3 per liter and zero respectively.

Amid fears of rising oil prices, residents flocked to gas stations across India. In Uttar Pradesh, police were deployed at several outlets to maintain order and prevent untoward incidents, HT reported.

Gasoline prices in major cities remained largely unchanged. The highest price of petrol in Hyderabad was recorded at $107.46. Yesterday, the price of petrol in Hyderabad was the same.

The central government’s notification to reduce customs duties comes amid supply disruptions due to the ongoing war between the United States and Iran, which has pushed global crude oil prices above $100. The disruption of major supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz has exacerbated the situation.

The previous day, Nayara Energy, India’s largest private fuel retailer, increased petrol prices by $5.30 per liter and diesel $3 per litre. According to news agency PTI, Nayara Energy, which operates 6,967 of the 102,075 petrol pumps in India, has decided to pass on part of the increase in input costs to consumers.
