Samantha Ruth Prabhu on sexism; 'Stop editing,' says 'Maa Inti Bangaram' actor; Shares a bold vision for women

Samantha Ruth Prabhu forcefully explained the uphill battle women face in cinema, saying they have to “fight for everything twice as hard”. She highlighted women’s tendency to adapt, sacrifice, and over-apologize. Prabhu envisions a future in which female-led stories are just “stories,” and women on screen are complex individuals, not mere plot devices.

“The film industry makes women fight for everything twice as hard,” she said. She went on to explain how these struggles are often internalized and normalized over time.

Adjust, sacrifice and apologize

To explain further, Samantha pointed to the daily compromises that women make in their professional lives. “We adjust our schedules, our opinions, and our ambitions so that everyone around us feels comfortable,” she said. “And we do it so cheerfully and so willingly that we don’t even register it as a sacrifice.”She added: “Did you know that women apologize almost ten times more than men in the same situation? Imagine. Ten times more.”Samantha sent a powerful message: “Stop. I’m saying this with the utmost humility and because I care. Stop. Because you deserve to take up the space you’ve earned. Credit is not a bad word. Ambition is not a character flaw. And accepting a compliment with a simple thank you is not arrogance. It’s just the truth.”

Samantha Ruth Prabhu shares her vision

The actress also shared her long-term vision for women in cinema, “I dream of the day when we stop calling women-led stories as if that’s class, or danger, or worse, or apology…and just call them stories.”She continued, “I dream of the day when women on screen are as contradictory, complex, and human as the women they are watching. Not just someone’s wife. Or the reason a hero finds his courage. Just themselves.”

“Completely.”Perhaps her most striking statement came when she added, “I dream of the day when a woman negotiating her contract is the most boring headline of the week. And I dream of the day when safety on set is not quite literally a one-time conversation but something this industry builds as a foundation.”
