Emilia Jones remains on board to star in the project, which is being produced by LuckyChap, the company helmed by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Josie McNamara, and Milan Popelka; and Coup, the banner of Peppiatt’s production.
The screenplay is inspired by the book Bad Bridget: Crime, Mayhem, and the Lives of Irish Immigrant Women Written by Eileen Farrell and Leanne McCormick and developed with support from Queen’s University Belfast.
The book looked into the world of Bad Bridget, a group of Irish immigrant women who were considered troublemakers, noting that Irish women outnumbered Irish men in prisons for some time. (It didn’t help that some of the detained women were there out of “stubbornness.”)
The project was one of the best-selling titles on the US film market last fall.
According to the producers, the script’s story begins when a mysterious letter sets a young woman on a perilous journey from famine-ravaged Ireland to 19th-century New York, whereupon she joins the ranks of Irish Bridget who is wreaking havoc in the city.
