Disney+ is “ramping up production” across Europe, increasing the commissioning of scripted and unscripted content, including a high-profile documentary about Welsh soul singer Daffy, a murder mystery set in Italy, and a Turkish comedy featuring a 350-year-old vampire virgin.
Speaking at the Series Mania TV festival on Wednesday, Angela Jain, head of content for EMEA, said Disney+ will boost regional production across Europe.
Jayne highlighted several regional highlights, including a feature-length documentary about Duffy, the Welsh soul singer who rose to international fame with the success of her single “Mercy” before disappearing from the public eye. Years later, Duffy posted on social media that she had been kidnapped and assaulted. The Disney+ documentary from Rare TV and Stellify Media will be her first time speaking publicly about her story.
In Italy, Disney+ has commissioned what Jain called a “classic whodunit” – Murder in Lake Garda – Based on Tom Hindle’s best-selling book about a murder on the eve of an enchanted wedding. Fremantle label The apartment will produce.
More on the weird side of the spectrum The Strange Story of Gustav Mayera supernatural comedy from Türkiye, which Jane presented as a “hilarious love story about a 350-year-old virgin vampire who falls in love with a human.” MGX is produced in Türkiye.
In Spain, the broadcast company ordered the documentary series Abandonedwhich will tell the real-life story of three children who were found abandoned at a city train station. Forty years later, they set out to uncover the truth about their parents and why they abandoned them. Luminol Media is producing.
Notable by its absence from Jain’s commissioning slate was Europe’s largest TV territory, Germany, where Disney+ has halted several planned productions while it reevaluates its local strategy there.
