He was scheduled to start his election campaign for the upcoming assembly elections in Kerala today with a major rally in Kozhikode. However, senior Congress MP Mallikarjun Kharge will now visit the state earmarked for the elections in place of Rahul and has left for Kozhikode.

This development comes a day after Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. She is receiving treatment there, and doctors are monitoring her condition, as reported earlier.

Sonia Gandhi was feeling unwell due to the change in weather and was under observation, news agency PTI reported, citing sources. She added that a team of doctors is treating her, but there is nothing serious.

The Rajya Sabha MP was admitted to hospital in January as well after she suffered from respiratory problems. At the time, doctors attributed her deteriorating health to the combined effects of cold weather and the level of pollution in Delhi. The congressman reportedly suffered from bronchial asthma, which was slightly worsening at the time.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Kozhikode has been planned in the backdrop of the upcoming elections in Kerala. He was reportedly supposed to hold his rally at Kozhikode beach in the evening, marking the start of his campaign tour in the state ahead of the April 9 elections.

Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, who heads the election campaign committee, reportedly said last week that Rahul Gandhi is expected to explain the key promises of the United Democratic Front, including the proposed ‘guarantee card’.

Leaders from the party at the national and state levels are also expected to attend the event, he said in a statement, as reported by news agency PTI.
