Authorities have fast-tracked the permanent relocation of 115 families from Uttarakhand’s Dharali district, months after flash floods hit the region in August last year, burying parts of the district under 15-20 meters of debris and leaving dozens missing. Geological inspection of the land identified for transfer in Bhatwari began on Saturday, officials said

The administration said the idea is to rehabilitate families whose homes were buried under rubble and lack proper housing arrangements.
Assistant geologist Pradeep Kumar said a team conducted field inspections of plots of land identified by 30 affected families in the first phase of the relocation process. The inspection was carried out in the presence of the Revenue Sub-Inspector and assessors, during which the integrity of the land, its geological features and long-term stability were carefully assessed.
Kumar said that the exercise is being carried out in coordination with Bhatwari District Magistrate, and a detailed geological report will be submitted to District Magistrate Prashant Arya for taking action and approving the next phase of the transportation process.
Officials explained that the remaining affected families can inform the tehsil office of their proposed plots at any time, after which geological inspections of those plots will also be conducted.
Arya has directed officials to ensure that the relocation process is not lax so that the affected families can get relief and rehabilitation at the earliest.
