Bryan Cranston’s hair is shaved here and closely groomed there by Jen Kaczmarek before their characters’ 40th anniversary party in Hulu’s latest trailer Malcolm in the middle The reboot debuts on April 10.
“Come on, Dewey. I’ve seen this like 1,000 times… bushes,” Cranston’s Hal then tells Kaczmarek’s Lewis to go low-key with his nanny while on a Zoom call with Caleb Ellsworth Clark, who plays Dewey in the four-part revival.
This comedic moment reflects how chaotic and clearly unfair life still is for Malcolm, the genius middle child played by Frankie Muniz as he reunites with Cranston, Kaczmarek and his siblings in their dysfunctional home. “This family’s nonstop antisocial behavior and reckless myopic priorities are toxic to me,” Malcolm cries in frustration at another point in the final trailer.
The series also brings back Christopher Kennedy Masterson (Francis), Justin Berfield (Reese) and Amy Colegado (Pyama) as they are joined by new cast members Kelly Carsten as Leah, Malcolm’s daughter, Vaughan Murray as Kelly, Malcolm’s younger brother and Kiana Madeira as Tristan, Malcolm’s girlfriend.
Disney ordered a short-lived revival of the film Malcolm in the middle last year with series creator Linwood Bomer returning as writer and executive producer. The original series premiered on Fox in January 2000 and ran for seven seasons, winning seven Emmy Awards, including awards for writing and directing in 2000 and 2001.
The limited series from 20th Television, part of Disney Television Studios and New Regency, will also stream on Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the US and on Disney+ globally.
