IndiGo, India’s largest airline, announced on Tuesday that its CEO Peter Elbers has resigned from his position. Neither Elbers, who is contracted until 2027, nor IndiGo gave a reason for the move, which comes three months after the airline faced massive flight disruptions and Elbers also faced direct scrutiny.

They thanked each other, and Elbers sought to waive the notice period in his resignation, although it was not immediately clear how long he would remain in office to hand over power. But his term ended by about 18 months with this move; He joined IndiGo in September 2022 for a five-year term ending in 2027.

Mass cancellations in December 2025 due to a shortage of pilots – caused by the Flying Time Duty Limit (FTDL) norms – appear to have left tens of thousands of passengers stranded in India.

The General Directorate of Civil Aviation imposed a fine of $22.2 crore, and issued notices directly to Elbers. While he initially weathered calls for his resignation, the crisis has significantly damaged the airline’s reputation for punctuality.

For now, according to Indigo’s press release, Managing Director Rahul Bhatia will take over the management of the company until a replacement is appointed.

Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said: “Rahul returns to take charge of the airline to strengthen the company’s culture, enhance operational excellence and deepen its commitment to providing exceptional service, care, reliability and professionalism to its customers.”

“What happened last December?”

“What happened last December should never have happened,” Bhatia told employees via internal email after Elbers resigned.

“Our customers don’t deserve this. Neither do all of (you), especially the front-line employees (especially) who have borne most of the burden through no fault of their own,” he said.

He emphasized that he founded and nurtured IndiGo for twenty-two years and expressed a “deep sense of personal commitment and responsibility to our nation and to the company’s customers, employees, shareholders and all other stakeholders.”

He signed off on Shah Rukh Khan’s famous dialogue ‘Main hoon na’ – ‘I’m there’.
