Delhi Police arrested four accused who allegedly assaulted a Manipur woman and her friend in the national capital on Sunday in an alleged racist assault case. All four accused are juveniles, South Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police said in a post on X.

The Director of Public Prosecutions said: “During multiple raids carried out by different police teams in different locations, all four defendants in this matter were arrested.”
What happened?
On the evening of Women’s Day, a Manipur woman and her friend were taking a stroll in a park near Delhi’s Saket Court when a group of boys allegedly passed some notes on to them. When one of the women objected, the group of boys allegedly assaulted them after an argument.
“When one of the two women objected to these statements, an argument broke out, and the accused allegedly assaulted her,” PTI quoted a police officer as saying.

Angered by the incident, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma termed it “disgusting” and said such incidents of racist abuse against people from north-eastern India on the mainland should not be accepted as a new normal.

Sangma said he was “angry” over such incidents and had reached out to his Delhi counterpart Rekha Gupta to take strict action in the matter.
“We are outraged at the repeated attacks on the people of North East India. The physical assault on two of our compatriots from Manipur and Assam near Saket Court in Delhi is disgusting. Racist bullying should not be accepted as the new normal and we must act against it. Urge the authorities to take strict action,” Sangma wrote in an angry post on X.
In response, Delhi Police said that a criminal case has been registered against the accused and the police are in constant contact with the victim.
Delhi Police added that it does not tolerate such incidents and ensures strict legal action is taken against the accused.
“Sir, it is for your information that a criminal case has been registered under appropriate sections of the law. Delhi Police teams are in constant touch with the victim and are providing all necessary assistance,” the police wrote in response to Sangma’s post.
“Delhi Police does not tolerate such incidents. Strict legal action will be taken against the culprits,” they added.
