“Inside Out” characters join NHL players animated for the game in real time

Sadness, anger, fear and anxiety will be among the typical array of emotions on display at an NHL game when the Washington Capitals take on the New York Rangers on Sunday, April 5 in an animated alternate television broadcast called the Inside Out Classic.

ESPN+, Disney+, Disney Channel and Disney XD will present a real-time animated take on Hockey Island – straight from the mind Inside out Young Riley! – while the traditional NHL broadcast from Madison Square Garden will be available on ESPN. It all starts at 7pm EST.

The sequel Inside Out Classic will feature animated players skating side-by-side Inside out characters and leverage two types of tracking technologies – NHL EDGE location data (NHL Puck and Player Tracking) and Sony’s Hawk-Eye innovations – to bring the on-ice action.

As the trailer says, it’s “real-time animated NHL hockey set within the world of the mind.” Inside out“.

Voice talent from Disney/Pixar films, including Phyllis Smith (Sadness), Lewis Black (Anger), Tony Hale (Fear), and Maya Hawke (Anxiety), will also be featured in the animated show as well.

Using Beyond Sports’ Virtual Commentator technology from Sony, ESPN’s commentators calling the cartoon play — Drew Carter, Kevin Weekes and Arda Öcal — will wear virtual reality headsets to capture the action, immersing themselves in that environment.

In 2023, the NHL Big City Greens Classic featuring the same two teams was the first-ever display of real-time volumetric animation in sports.

ESPN and data-driven sports technology company Beyond Sports this year expanded its alternative broadcast television agreement using the Disney IP, and ESPN has produced several animated alternative television shows under the agreement as a way to attract new, casual fans to the sport.

Last season, the NHL produced A.J Hockey game this week On Saturday mornings it is shown on NHL Network in the United States, on Sportsnet in Canada and internationally on the NHL’s YouTube channel.
