Bipolar disorder is more complicated than just taking your medication and moving on

On the Tuesday, March 3 episode of the Benny Blanco program Friends keep secrets podcast, Selena appeared as a guest.

(She made sure everyone saw that, duplicating her millions of followers as “close friends” to get people to see her story post and listen to her husband’s podcast.)

In a conversation with Lil Dicky and Kristin Patalucco, couple Selena and Penny discussed her mental health.

She freely admitted that it took a “very complicated” journey that included several therapists and rehabilitation before she was diagnosed.

Finally, Selena learned she has bipolar disorder, a diagnosis she first revealed in 2020.

Penny shared that Selena sometimes has moments of “mania.”

At first, he didn’t know what it was. And Selena doesn’t always seem to know (which is pretty standard).

“She will start to realize she has the disease afterward, and sometimes she doesn’t even remember when it happened,” he admitted.

Penny continued, “It’s sensitive because you’re not technically supposed to talk to the person about it while they’re delving into it. Even dating her, she’s very self-conscious.”

“She’ll say, ‘I think I’m feeling a little manic,'” Penny described.

Receiving the diagnosis was very affirming

Selena confirmed that she is not ashamed to be exposed to those moments of obsession.

She is now better able to recognize and recognize these seizures.

“But it helps to have a partner who understands where the temperature might be, and meets you where you are,” she praised.

“And after that, you will gradually understand what is happening,” Selena continued.

Receiving her diagnosis helped her feel free to live her life “freely.”

Knowing she has bipolar disorder also helped Selena contextualize how she responds to things.

“I was acting out of fear, I was acting out of love, I was acting out of emotion, it was all inconsistent,” she described.

Selena then described: “It was crazy.”

It should be noted that some people with mental illness, even jokingly, call themselves “crazy” when describing themselves.

For others, it represents their worst fear of how society might view them. Both points of view are correct.

Temperature control? Hey, whatever helps!

In addition to the support from her husband and other close loved ones, Selena also uses medications, of course.

She also shared that she uses temperature regulation to “calm down” her emotions, as different rings respond better to heat or cold.

(We don’t know if psychiatrists will be prescribing heaters or air conditioners anytime soon, but it’s just the right temperature He does It often makes everything else a little easier.)

We’re so happy to see that Selena found a way to make her life work as a person with bipolar disorder.

It’s also comforting to know that she has support in her life, including (and especially) from her husband.
