Imagine just riding a horse turning into something so messy that it ends up being a funny story to tell at a show. This is what happened to Eddie Vedder and Bruce Springsteen; Both creative artists and legends in their own right, but when it came to horse riding, it took a ‘terrifying’ turn.
At least that’s what Vedder revealed in a recent conversation while recalling an unforgettable and unexpected adventure the “Born to Run” musician took part in.Read on to learn more about that experience.
A road trip took an unexpected turn
Picture this: Eddie Vedder and Bruce Springsteen, two rock legends, tough as nails on stage, trying to look cool while riding horses with their wives. What started out as a quiet day outside turned into something much more intense and, frankly, pretty funny in hindsight. It all came to light when Vedder attended “The Howard Stern Show” on March 3, 2026. He told Howard about this visit to Springsteen’s house with his wife Jill and Springsteen’s wife Patti Sialfa. The plan was simple: everyone would go on a relaxing trip on horseback. But Vader is not a fan of horses. He straight-up admitted that they scared him, but he still wanted to play it cool, especially with Springsteen leading the way.
“I’m terrified of horses, and that trip with Bruce didn’t help anything at all,” Vedder admitted. “I was trying to act without fear. I was like, ‘I’ve got this…’ You know, don’t let the shark know you’re scared.”Springsteen did his best to help, laying out the basics. But it doesn’t matter. Vader’s horse suddenly pulled off the path and headed straight into the forest. The man is holding on for dear life. “I don’t know what’s going on, I’m just trying to surf.
What I remember is riding the horse and looking where am I going to jump? “Where will I jump?” He said. Everyone started shouting directions, “Swipe right! Swipe!” But he was unable to find a safe place to be released on bail.
Fortunately, the horse stopped on its own, and everyone stood there in amazement.Patty Sialfa commented that the horse’s behavior was “very strange” and was possibly “bad barn”. Then, when Vader thought it was over, the horse took off again.
Somehow, he managed to hold on both times. Springsteen even told him, “That was pretty good horsemanship, you know, you didn’t hit your head.”Vedder, who has been friends with Springsteen for years, is promoting his documentary “A Matter of Time.” The two have crossed paths many times. Vedder even played “My City of Ruins” for Springsteen at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2009. “All I can say is everything you imagined, you’re not even halfway there,” Vedder told Stern.
“Just as a person, as an artist, as a friend.”This horse story is not new to them either. They actually laughed about it in a 2022 interview around the time Vedder dropped his “Earthling” album. Vedder mentioned that his wife, Jill, rides horses all the time. Springsteen even gave him props for staying on the runaway horse, saying it was “well done.”After they finally returned to the fold, Springsteen took a photo with his black-and-white camera and later sent Vedder two large prints. This small gesture ended up inspiring Vedder’s song “Portrait.”
