The Telangana government will soon enact new legislation for the overall administration of the capital Hyderabad, officials said on Saturday.

The new municipal law, called the Hyderabad Metropolitan Municipal Corporation Act, will replace the existing Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Act and will be implemented in the administration of three municipal corporations – GHMC, Malkagiri and Cyberabad.
The decision was taken at a high-level official meeting held by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday evening. The legislation is expected to be introduced in the House’s next budget session in the second week of March.
According to an official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Reddy has instructed that all permissions, fee structure and development works must be completed in accordance with the Urban Basic Law. He explained that development works within the municipal limits will receive top priority in the prestigious 99-day program that will be launched by the state government soon.
The Prime Minister said that road construction should be given top priority in the core urban area. He suggested that the roads be built under the Employment Guarantee Scheme.
“In order to ensure proper maintenance of roads, all roads under the jurisdiction of the Roads and Buildings Department in the core urban area will be transferred to the municipal administration and urban development department. This will help prevent confusion over road ownership by different agencies,” he said.
The Prime Minister also suggested constructing elevated walkways designed to reduce traffic congestion at various places in the city.
He added that regular monitoring and function of street lights on the dashboard should also be carried out and hence identified problems should be resolved immediately.
He instructed officials to give top priority to fire safety in the core urban area, review proposals and designs and ordered officials to study the proposal to develop buildings of historical importance into tourist areas.
