'Please Don't Cast Me': 'Aasi' Actress Kani Kasruti Makes Serious Appeal, Explains She 'Still Thinking in Malayalam'

Kani Kesruti, who gained international fame with ‘All We Imagine As Light’, makes her Hindi debut in Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Assi’. She plays Parima, a rape survivor who seeks justice along with her lawyer Taapsee Pannu’s character. The film has collected Rs 5.6 crore in five days and is the third collaboration between Taapsee and Anubhav after Mulk and Thappad.

Kani Kesruti, who won global acclaim with Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light, recently entered Hindi cinema with Anubhav Sinha’s Assi, a thrilling courtroom drama. In the film, she plays Parima, a rape survivor from New Delhi who fights for justice with the help of her lawyer Ravi, played by Taapsee Pannu. Speaking recently in an interview, Kani spoke about the challenges of working in a new language, the changing atmosphere for women on Malayalam film sets, and her thoughts on stories rooted in street justice and revenge.

In a conversation with SCREEN, Kani spoke about why she hasn’t been appearing in many Hindi films lately. The regional actress shared, “Because I don’t speak Hindi. I won’t be able to do all the roles that come to me. I tell them, ‘Please don’t cast me.’ It has to be something like Aasi because Anubhav made my character from Kerala very well. Otherwise he wanted it to be from another part of north India, maybe from Delhi.”

I told him I couldn’t even learn the lines. It will take me a lot of time to understand them. I don’t think I can learn Hindi so fast. As well as culture and many other things. I am a true Malayali in every aspect. I’m still thinking about Malayalam. I have to constantly translate when I speak in English.
