Passengers at Savannah Hilton Head International Airport at 400 Airways Ave, Savannah, Georgia reported seeing flames on Sunday. The fire was reportedly seen outside the runway.

It was caused by a grass fire, WSAV reported, citing an airport official. The 165th National Guard is reportedly responding. Airport operations have not yet been affected.

“I was just sent gunshots from a passenger at Savannah Hilton Head International Airport. I’m working to find out more about what’s going on. The passenger told me he saw the fire department at the scene, and that his flight was delayed,” one person wrote.
Photos were shared by a WSAV reporter as well.
The grass fire was also captured by someone from an airplane.
“I was impressed with the @delta 1067 crew out of Savannah who got us back safely after the engine failure. They even told us not to worry about the grass fire! Things happen and that’s why Delta flies. Best trained crews in the industry,” they wrote.

Someone on X asked if the grass fire was caused by a Delta flight engine burning out. But the cause of the fire is not yet known.
This comes after wind speeds at Savannah-Hilton Head Airport reached 59 mph. Wind warnings continued into Sunday evening across Southeast Georgia and the Lowcountry, a WJCL News meteorologist shared. The National Weather Service in Charleston, South Carolina, also confirmed the wind speeds.
Reactions to report of fire at Savannah Airport
Many people reacted to news of the fire at the Savannah Airport. “Smoke and flames in Pooler from a grass fire near the Savannah Airport,” a WJCL reporter shared.
“I just read that a Delta plane lost an engine in the woods. Not sure how accurate that is. But it might explain the grass fire,” one person commented on Facebook. Many expressed concerns about wind speeds. One person noted: “I hope they can get it under control. These strong winds are no joke today!”
Another said: “Bad day for a fire. The wind was blowing.” Others prayed, saying, “Saying prayers for everyone to be well including the emergency landing of the plane and the situation involving the fire including fire and emergency personnel.”
While there has been some speculation that it was a controlled burn, there is no indication that is the case. Many also pointed out that given the wind speed, it would not be a good day to conduct controlled burns in the first place.
