Pictures and videos circulated on social media showed smoke and fires across the city, while eyewitnesses reported explosions.

“I spoke via FaceTime with my mother who is in Puerto Vallarta. She showed me plumes of smoke all over the city while she’s staying inside. There’s gang violence going on there right now,” journalist Jeremy Gojola wrote on X.

“Code Red” has been activated.

In a post on social media, Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemos Navarro announced that “federal forces carried out an operation in Tapalpa a few hours ago, leading to confrontations in the area. Also as a result of this operation, at different points of that area and in other parts of Jalisco, individuals burned and blocked vehicles to obstruct the work of the authorities.”

“I have given instructions to immediately form a security committee with authorities from all three levels of government and activate Code Red in order to prevent actions against the population.”
