Thrillers still dominate the most-read books on Goodreads: Three of the top five titles this week are thrillers, including two by Freda McFadden. Of course, mods are a good way to get into this list, so Wuthering Heights made it into the top five – pushing Heated Rivalry up to sixth place.

Two new books released this week you should know about

Unfortunately, the most read books on Goodreads are not diverse by any definition of the word. So, here are two new books released this week that deserve a wider readership.

Cover of the OPAC Code book

The Obaki Code by Makana Yamamoto

From the author of Hammajang Luck comes a new lesbian sci-fi heist! Malia used to be O’Baki, a notorious hacker, but was successful enough to retire three years ago. It turns out that leaving a life of crime behind is easier said than done, and Malia can’t help but fake some cyber battles. This puts her on the wrong side of a brutal gang leader, who offers her a deal: eliminate a local politician “cleaning the streets” — or die. It’s too easy a choice, and Malia calls on her old contacts for help (including a murderous con artist) but soon becomes embroiled in a political and supernatural conspiracy. —Danica Ellis

On Morrison by Namwale Serpell

Here, Serpell, an award-winning author, guides readers through the work of literary icon Toni Morrison. The professor – who teaches a course on Morrison – analyzes the author’s novels, criticism, drama and even poetry, giving additional context to the work in addition to her unique analysis. If you’re looking to get better acquainted with one of the most important American writers of the last century, this is a great primer. -Erica Ezevedi

No. 5:

Cover photo for My Sister-In-Law by Alice Finney

My Husband’s Wife by Alice Finney

In January, the television series His & Hers, based on Alice Finney’s book of the same name, began airing. A few weeks later, Feeney’s hot new movie was released, so it’s no surprise that it’s getting a lot of attention. The film’s events revolve around a woman who returns home one day to find that her key no longer fits in the lock, and the woman who opens the door claims to be her husband’s wife. It promises to be a “mind-blowing marriage thriller.” It has been read by 16,000 Goodreads users this week and has an average rating of 4.2.

No. 4:

Cover of The Handmaid's Book by Freda Macfadyen

The Maid by Freda Macfadyen

This is the first book in the Frieda Macfadyen’s Maid series, followed by The Maid’s Secret and The Maid is Watching. The film revolves around a housemaid who cleans for a wealthy family, takes care of their child, and lives in their attic bedroom. She is soon drawn into the family’s dangerous secrets, but her employers may have underestimated her ability. The film adaptation has now been released. It has been read by 19,000 Goodreads users, with an average rating of 4.3.

No. 3:

Reporter cover

Reporter by Virginia Evans

This turned out to be the sleeper hit of 2025: its popularity has continued to grow, seemingly only through word-of-mouth recommendations. Katie Couric recently named this book the top pick for her new book club. It is about a woman who wrote letters daily throughout her life. When someone from her past strikes back, she must reevaluate a painful period in her life and find a way to forgive. This has been read by 19,000 users this week and has an average rating of 4.5.

No. 2:

Wuthering Heights cover

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

It’s not often that we see a classic novel in the top five best-read books on Goodreads, but the latest adaptation – whatever its connection to the original – has renewed interest in it. I initially assumed that readers who picked it up because of the movie would be disappointed (and confused) by the book, because they’re so different, but the average rating has actually improved since the movie was announced. It has been read by 21,000 users on Goodreads this week and has an average rating of 3.9.

No. 1:

Dear Debbie cover

Dear Debbie by Freda McFadden

McFadden’s latest thriller revolves around an advice columnist who guides women who write to her through dealing with dull or even abusive husbands. When she loses her job and realizes her husband is keeping secrets from her, she decides it’s time for her to take her own advice and get revenge. It was read by nearly 40,000 users on Goodreads this week, and has an average rating of 4.1.
