New Delhi:
Congress criticizes the government: The Congress on Thursday (July 27), while citing rules, termed the passage of bills in the Lok Sabha as unfortunate and a farce when a no-confidence motion is pending in the lower house of Parliament.
The no-confidence motion moved by the Congress against the Narendra Modi government was accepted yesterday. The opposition is demanding that Prime Minister Modi make a statement in Parliament on the controversial Manipur issue. However, after the government said it was ready to discuss the issue, the opposition moved a no-confidence motion to force the Prime Minister to speak on the matter.
The proceedings of both houses have been stalled till today with the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha witnessing repeated adjournments. The Lok Sabha managed to pass two bills today amid noise and slogans from the opposition.
“It is unfortunate that one bill after another is being passed in the Lok Sabha amidst fanfare,” Congress member Manish Tiwari said on Twitter.
Citing the rules, an excerpt of which he shared in his post, MP urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to initiate discussion on impeachment.
“I request Speaker @ombirlakota to initiate discussion on the no-confidence motion without hesitation or hesitation. It is a farce to pass the bills while the no-confidence motion is still pending,” Tiwari tweeted.
Jairam Ramesh repeats the request
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that there is absolute clarity in the position of the opposition bloc – India – in Parliament on discussing the proposal at the earliest.
“There is absolute clarity in the position of the Indian parties in Parliament. 1. We want the no-confidence motion moved by the parties in the Lok Sabha in the immediate context of the Manipur issue, which was accepted by the Speaker, to be taken up as soon as possible. As per the rules and conventions, no legislative business can be taken up until the no-confidence motion is discussed,” Jairam said.
He added that the opposition wants a statement from the Prime Minister in the Senate on Manipur “immediately”.
“2. We want a statement by the Prime Minister in the Rajya Sabha on Manipur immediately followed by a discussion under Rule 267, which means that the issue raised under this rule takes precedence over all other issues.”
“This is the clear and consistent demand of the Indian parties so that the collective sense of pain over what happened in Manipur is expressed and the collective resolve to promote peace, harmony and reconciliation in the state is expressed,” the Congress Rajya Sabha MP added.
The opposition is also demanding that Modi make a statement on the Manipur issue in Parliament before discussing the issue, a demand that the government has not accepted.
Impasse has been prevailing in both houses since the beginning of the monsoon session on July 20.
More than 160 people have been killed and several hundred injured since ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3.
