MG’s portfolio in India can grow from six vehicles to over ten vehicles in as little as two years

JSW MG Motor is set to begin a major onslaught of new products soon. According to recent media reports, the company has prepared about six models for launch by next year, most of which are scheduled to arrive this year. Last year, JSW MG Motor added two new models to its range – Cyberster and M9, expanding its portfolio to include six cars. The company also performed a second facelift on Hector. A new report from the Economic Times says it will launch four SUVs this year.

JSW MG Motor’s first launch this year will be the Majestor, an improved version of the Gloster. The company recently conducted its media campaign and opened advance bookings. It plans to announce prices in April and start deliveries in May.

A recent Autocar India report says that JSW MG Motor is planning to launch a new model codenamed ‘520’ in electric and hybrid variants by October, which could be two of the three launches scheduled this calendar year. This model is likely to be a modified version of the Wuling Starlight 560, a low-cost SUV developed by GM-SAIC-Wuling, also marketed globally as the Wuling Eksion.

At 4745mm long, 1850mm wide and 1755mm high, the Wuling Starlight 560 is comparable to the Mahindra XUV 7XO. It has a wheelbase of 2810 mm and is available in 5- and 7-seater versions. JSW MG Motor may offer both versions to give customers flexibility between efficiency and space.

In China, the plug-in hybrid model uses a 105 PS/130 Nm 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 194 PS/230 Nm permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). The electronic CVT sends drive to the wheels. A 20.5 kWh LFP battery pack powers the PMSM and provides an emission-free range of 125 km, according to the CLTC. The plug-in hybrid model has a top speed of 170 km/h.

In preparation for expanding its vehicle lineup, JSW MG Motor plans to expand its production capacity as well, from 1.2 lakh units to around 3 lakh units. It will also localize more components to reduce production costs and price its vehicles more attractively. The company is looking to invest Rs 4,000-5,000 crore in new products, capacity expansion and further localization.
