Stopping “border killings”, starting negotiations for renewal Ganges Treatyand increasing the number of medical visas are some of the priority areas of the incoming Bangladesh government, sources in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party said. The Hindu Friday (February 13, 2026).

“Apart from all the problems, it is the border killings by Indian border security forces that create the biggest problem for the Bangladesh government. Reports of killings in border areas immediately create passion, especially when protests erupt in university campuses, exacerbating the situation,” said a source working on BNP’s neighborhood projects.

The BNP member said that India and Bangladesh have a demarcated border and there is no point in firing to kill someone. “If someone is suspected of smuggling, they should be arrested and not shot,” the source argued, calling for a more humane approach to the matter.

He said India should look into the issue of continued presence of former Prime Minister Hasina and her top aides on Indian soil as the statements of Awami League leaders pose a challenge to normalization of ties and indicated that these issues would be among the first issues to be discussed by the incoming government.

‘Contract renewal pending’

If pushed by medical visa denial, we will find an alternative, an alternative is automatically presented in today’s world, but our cultural commonalities make medical treatment in India a more comfortable process,” the source said, urging India to step up people-to-people diplomacy.
