Salem: A 50-year-old porter worker from Mettur, identified as Murugan, died after consuming alcohol mixed with poison near a TVK meeting venue in Salem, police said.
TVK chief Vijay held a rally in Salem, Tamil Nadu today. (PTI)He is said to have come to Salem and left a letter mentioning family problems. His body was found in front of the venue. A case has been filed. His family is at Salem Government Hospital to receive the body after post-mortem, police added.
Meanwhile, clashes broke out between journalists and activists of the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) after a man suffered a heart attack during the TVK Pradhan victory rally. The journalists alleged that the cadres tried to attack them while covering the incident.
A 37-year-old man from Maharashtra reportedly suffered a heart attack during a rally led by TVK Pradhan Vijay. His body was brought to Salem Hospital. The deaths come months after a stampede at a victory rally in Karure claimed around 40 lives.
Talking about the incident, the police said, “During the incident, he suddenly collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital, but was declared brought dead due to heart attack. Police are investigating the incident further.”
The deceased has been identified as Suraj, who lived in Sevvaipettai area of Salem and was engaged in silversmithing. He was married and is survived by his wife and one child. The actor-politician was addressing supporters today amid heavy police deployment and strict entry rules.
According to sources, the deceased, who was present as a spectator at a meeting organized for party administrators, collapsed suddenly. The people present at the spot rushed him to Manima Hospital, but he was declared brought dead due to heart attack. Police are further investigating the incident.
