He added that Vande Bharat services were launched in February 2019 and are currently operating on 82 routes with 164 train services.
The Railway Minister informed that Bande Bharat trains operate as a distinct passenger service category with a fixed fare structure and features like advanced suspension system, semi-high-speed operations with rapid acceleration, automatic plug doors, ergonomic seats, mini pantry, CCTV and KAVACH.
Keeping in mind the capacity, he said, the fare structure of these trains has been kept below the cost of the service.
“For a journey between 300 to 400 kms, Vande Bharat AC chair car fares approx ₹2.19 per km, which is much lower than the fares for similar services in countries like China, Japan and France, where it ₹From 7 ₹20 per kilometre,” said Vaishnav.
He added, “The rational fare structure has facilitated massive expansion of these services across the country, reflecting strong passenger demand for these services. Vande Bharat services have high occupancy levels on all major routes with Vande Bharat occupying close to 100 per cent, demonstrating changing passenger preferences.”
Talking about the general class fares of other trains, Vaishnav said they are lowest compared to other countries.
Comparing the general class fares of Indian Railways and similar services in neighboring countries, Vaishnav said that the fare per kilometer in India is 20 paisa, while in Pakistan it is 54 paisa, in Bangladesh 37 paisa and in Sri Lanka 51 paisa.
