New security camp set up in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur to curb Naxalite menace, boost developmentThe camp will be the forward operating base of the 20th Battalion of the Chhattisgarh Armed Forces and will expedite developmental works in remote areas, a police official said.
A joint team of District Reserve Guard, District Police and CAF completed setting up camp at Palsegundi village under Farsegarh police station limits on Monday, he said.
The camp has been set up under the state government’s ‘Niyad Nella Naar’ scheme to strengthen anti-Naxalite operations and promote development in the hinterland. Despite difficult terrain, lack of road connectivity and harsh weather conditions, the security forces successfully completed the operation, the official said.
The new camp will facilitate the provision of basic amenities like healthcare, education, electricity, drinking water, public distribution system, mobile connectivity, roads and bridges to local residents. It would also help in controlling the inter-state movement of Maoists and strengthen peace and confidence in the region, he said.
The camp marks an important step towards improving connectivity between Bhopalpatnam, Farsegarh, Sendra and Gadchiroli. Construction of a bridge over the Indravati River on the Chhattisgarh-Maharashtra link road is underway, which will further improve access to remote villages, including areas close to the Indravati National Park, he said.
Since January 2024, a total of 35 new security camps have been set up in Bijapur district. As a result of the sustained anti-Naxalite operation, 918 Maoists surrendered in the district, 232 were killed in encounters and 1,163 were arrested.
On Monday, security forces also demolished a Maoist memorial built in the forest near Palsegundi, according to officials.
Villagers have welcomed the establishment of the camp, hoping that it will reduce Naxal fears, improve administrative reach and accelerate development work in the region.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah concluded his three-day visit to the state on Monday during which he reiterated that the target set by the government would be to completely eliminate the Naxal menace from the country by March 31.
