Bagchi said the suspect, Achi Mahesh Reddy alias Sunny, was allegedly involved in multiple housebreaking incidents across Gajuwaka, Arilova, Malkapuram, Pendurthi and Duvada police station limits in the last three months.

“The accused was allegedly involved in the theft of 1,084.94 grams of gold, 6,333.50 grams of silver. ₹40,500 in cash from various houses across the city,” he said.

Reddy, a resident of Kakinada and Madhavadhara in Visakhapatnam, was taken into custody on Saturday after months of investigation by the Gajuwaka crime police.

“He had earlier worked with a prominent IT firm in Hyderabad… He turned to theft to earn quick money and maintain a modest lifestyle,” the police commissioner said.

Bagchi said that Mahesh Reddy was a graduate, but he started committing crimes at the age of just 15 and was detained as a juvenile in this case.

But he did not change course and was allegedly involved in 32 other thefts across Kakinada, Sarapavaram, Ramachandrapuram, Indrapalem and Rajamahendravaram. He was caught again and spent 14 months in Rajahmundry Central Jail.

Bagchi said Reddy was found by the Visakhapatnam police during investigation into a theft case registered by Kanna Siva Ramakrishna, a local resident of Gajuwaka on October 14, 2025. ₹4.31 lakh rupees disappeared in the theft incident.

He said a special team headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) K Latha Madhuri, Assistant Commissioner of Police (In-Charge Crime) A Narasimha Murthy and South Divisional Crime Inspector K Srinivas Rao has been formed to track the accused.

“Police can identify and arrest the accused as a result of impartial investigation and technical analysis,” Bagchi said.

“Acting on a tip-off, the special team arrested Sunny on Saturday. A case has been registered for theft and robbery. Further investigation is on,” the police commissioner said.
