Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Bhonjagin Valte, who was seriously injured in a mob attack in the early days of communal violence in May 2023, was flown out of Manipur state capital Imphal on Sunday in an air ambulance, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s office said in a statement.
(x/)”Kuki-jo MLA Shri Bhonjagin Valte was airlifted from Imphal to New Delhi today for treatment at Medant – Medicity Hospital, Gurugram. Shri Valte, who was seriously injured during the May 2023 violence in Imphal, was staying at Churachandpur after prolonged treatment in Delhi,” his office said.
Valte, a former minister in the previous N Biren Singh-led government, was attacked in Imphal in the early days of the violence that began on May 3, 2023 between the Meitei and Kuki-jo communities.
Officials said his health condition deteriorated on Saturday, after which he was rushed to Churachandpur Medical College Hospital, where he is being treated in its intensive care unit.
“Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh monitored Valte’s health throughout the night and sent an advanced life-support ambulance with a team of doctors from Imphal to Churachandpur at midnight,” a statement issued by the chief minister’s office said.
“Through tele-conference, the doctors in Imphal were in constant touch with the medical team of Churachandpur Medical College Hospital. Taking personal care of the situation, the Chief Minister immediately arranged for an air ambulance to evacuate the BJP MLA. However, Bhalte’s condition remained critical during the night.”
As his condition improved, the MLA was shifted from Churachandpur Medical College Hospital to Imphal along with the deputy commissioner of the district.
Two BJP MLAs, Tongbram Ravindra Singh, who represents Thanga assembly constituency in Bishnupur district and Sansam Premchandra Singh, who represents Kumbi assembly constituency in the same district, took their ailing colleague from Churachandpur to Faujakhai village and then to Imphal airport.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh welcomed Valte at Imphal Airport at 4.20 pm. He interacted with Valte’s family members and wished him a speedy recovery.
“Poo Valte, please come back after you are fully recovered. I will wait for your return,” Khemchand Singh said, according to the statement.
The air ambulance carrying the vault took off from the Imphal airport around 4.30 pm.
