An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after his 20-year-old man died in hospital after he was stabbed in Leicester city centre, Leicestershire Police said.
Police and East Midlands Ambulance Service were called to reports of a man collapsed just after 5pm on Tuesday. They then received information that the man had been stabbed.
The ambulance service took the man to Leicester Royal Infirmary, where he died a short time later, police said. An 18-year-old man has been arrested and is in police custody on suspicion of murder, the force said in a statement.
A preliminary investigation by officers indicated that the victim had gotten into an argument with another man on the street and left before police arrived.
Senior Investigating Officer, DI Lorna Granville, said: “We are currently investigating exactly what happened between two men who were reported to have been involved in a collision on the corner of Oxford Street and Bonners Lane.
“CCTV in the area is currently being reviewed and officers are speaking to potential witnesses to help our investigation. We know a number of people came to the aid of the victims before the emergency services arrived and we would like to thank them for their help.”
Authorities are appealing for potential witnesses, including motorists who captured the footage on dashcams, to come forward.
“The incident happened around 5pm so we know that area is also busy with motorists driving on Oxford Street,” Granville said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Liz Kendall, MP for Leicester West and cabinet minister, said she was “aware” of a “serious incident” and her thoughts were with those affected.
A spokesman for De Montfort University also previously said: “We are working with Leicestershire Police, who have launched an immediate investigation. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by what happened. We are providing direct support to students and staff who witnessed the incident.”
Police said the incident caused “major disruption in the city” as forensic and search specialists carried out tests.
Closures include Oxford Street, Infirmary Road, Infirmary Square, Carlton Street, York Road, Lower Brown Street, Gateway and Gosling Street. Infirmary Road junction with Islestone Road and Newark Street junction with Oxford Street are also closed.
University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust has warned patients with appointments on Wednesday that road closures around Leicester Royal Infirmary could be disrupted.
A statement on Facebook said: “Due to the current road closure near the hospital following an overnight incident, there will be traffic disruption in the area this morning. Please attend your appointment and allow extra time for your journey. Follow local diversions and police instructions. If you will be delayed, please contact your clinic or department.”
