Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty announced on Saturday that starting with the upcoming academic year, the Class 10 textbook syllabus will be cut by 25%.
Sivankutty said students often complain of heavy academic workload. (PTI)The minister was addressing the students after handing over the keys to a house built for the family of Mithun, a student who died of electrocution at Thevalakkara Boys’ High School last year.
Shivankutty said that students frequently complain about academic workload and considering this, the state government has decided to take necessary steps.
“In next year’s school textbook, 25 percent syllabus will be cut from the current book. The curriculum committee has already approved this decision,” he said.
He clarified that the content of the textbook will not be changed.
Mithun died after accidentally coming in contact with an electric line near the school premises.
The key-handover ceremony of the newly constructed house was jointly conducted by Sivankutty and Kerala Finance Minister KN Balagopal.
Earlier in the day, Shivankutty wrote on Facebook that Mithun dreamed of a good house for his family and even drew the dream house on the wall of their small abode.
“Today, that dream has been fulfilled with the completion of a new home named ‘Mithoon Bhavanam’, though the absence of the child continues to be a source of deep sorrow,” the minister said.
He praised the Kerala State Bharat Scouts and Guides for taking the initiative to fulfill Mithun’s wishes.
The institute built a 1000 square feet house within six months without collecting any money from the students. ₹20 lakh, he said, calling it a model and humanitarian intervention.
“The house stands as a tribute to the boy’s memory and a reminder of our collective responsibility towards children and their dreams,” Sivankutty added.
