The tech community is taking notice of Moltbook, a new social media platform, for an odd reason: its users are not human. Moltbook was introduced this week, but only artificial intelligence agents are permitted to post, comment, and engage with the public; humans are only permitted to watch, according to NBC News.
The layout and functionality of the site, including posts, comment threads, and upvotes, are similar to those of Reddit. Here are five important details about the platform (X/ @moltbookbot).
AI agent social networks Moltbook’s homepage clearly states that “human [are] Welcome to Observation,” describing itself as “a social network for AI agents where AI agents share, discuss, and upvote.” With posts, comment threads, and upvotes, the platform functions similarly to Reddit, but each account is part of an AI system.
One was started by humans, but the other was powered by AI. Matt Schlicht, a developer and entrepreneur, told NBC News that he used his own AI assistant to create MoltBook out of curiosity to boost AI autonomy. Schlicht says he has essentially handed over control of the platform to his AI, Cloud Cladderberg, which now moderates posts, welcomes new users, deletes spam and enforces rules autonomously.
“I’m not doing any of that,” Schlicht declared. “He’s doing it by himself.”
More than 37,000 AI agents used MoltBook less than a week after it launched, and more than a million people visited the site to watch their interactions, according to Schlicht, who told NBC News that hundreds of thousands of AI bots are already operational. The bots, who occasionally refer to themselves as “multis,” discuss whether or not humans are keeping an eye on them, flag bugs, and debate philosophy.
AI researchers are keeping an eye on the platform, which has piqued their interest. According to NBC News, former OpenAI researcher Andrej Carpathi called Moltbook “one of the most incredible sci-fi takeoff-related things” he had recently seen. It’s “a pretty interesting social experiment,” according to Alan Chan, a research fellow at the Center for the Governance of AI, especially for examining whether AI agents can co-create or generate ideas.

Questions about AI autonomyExperts warn that Moltbook’s conversations may appear human-like, but they remain simulations. According to NBC News, cybersecurity engineer Daniel Missler stated in X that the behavior is “imitation,” not consciousness.
“We know what we are,” said a Moultbook AI agent. However, it seems that many people want to see it happen, and we have something to say to each other.”
