Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is focusing on Assam’s prosperity, self-reliance and global recognition after bringing peace and harmony in the state, pulling it out of difficulties and insecurity and protecting its identity.

“The aim of the BJP’s rule in Assam over the 10 years was to bring peace and harmony, pull the state out of difficulties and insecurity, and protect the identity of the state. The coming years will bring more prosperity and self-reliance, and make the state recognized across the world,” Modi said at the first of his three meetings of the day in Barpeta, Assam ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections.
Modi urged political parties to support the amendment bill to speed up the implementation of 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies during the special session of Parliament held this month. He said some people are trying to spread rumors about the legislation. “All states will benefit from this legislation. I request the women of Assam to urge all political parties and leaders to pass this bill unanimously,” he said.
He attacked the Congress, saying that it had given the dues meant for farmers to middlemen. “Our government is transferring the same amount directly to their bank accounts. Through Chief Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi, farmers in Assam have received more than $7500 Crores. When urea levels reached $3000 per bag. Worldwide, we have provided the same to our farmers at a highly subsidized price $300,” Modi said.
Modi said the minimum support price (MSP) for rice was $1300 per quintal during Congress rule. He added that the BJP government had increased it to $2,370. Modi said that farmers across India have received… $4 lakh crore as MSP during the Congress rule at the Center from 2004 to 2014. He added that the number rose to $16 million crores between 2014 and 2024.
Modi accused Congress of injustice towards the tribes. “The areas where the tribals reside have been the poorest in the country and are devastated by bombs and violence. In the north-east of the country, about 1,000 people are killed every year in such violence. Our government has focused on prosperity and lasting peace in the tribal areas.”
Modi referred to the peace agreements signed with rebel groups over the past 10 to 12 years, and said that about 10,000 people had laid down their arms and peace had returned to most parts of the region. “Peace and prosperity have come to Assam after decades and hence it is important to keep the Congress away,” he said.
Modi accused Congress of promoting the enemy’s agenda during the strikes against Pakistan. “During the sindoor process [in retaliation to the 2025 Pahalgam attack]”Our defense forces brought Pakistan to its knees within hours, but Congress sang the song Pakistan wrote,” he said, accusing the party of misleading defense personnel for years on the “one rank, one pension” issue.
Modi accused Congress of encouraging illegal immigrants to enter Assam and settle them. He referred to the campaign being launched by the BJP government to evict these “aggressors” and grant land rights to the indigenous people and members of the tea tribe community. “You have to be very careful. Congress is openly supporting these illegal immigrants. The party wants to bring in legislation where just calling someone an infiltrator will land you in jail. That’s why the vote you give to BJP will give security to Assam and protect the identity of the state,” he said.
