Security agencies have issued an alert about a possible explosion near Red Fort, a major tourist destination and a high security zone, after CIA agencies indicated that the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group had allegedly kept prominent religious sites in India on its target list.

Sources said specific inputs indicate that a temple in the Chandni Chowk area could be among the potential targets.

They added that while intelligence information is being verified and assessed, security measures have been strengthened in and around sensitive religious places and crowded public areas.

Intelligence agencies have indicated that the LeT may be trying to carry out an attack using IEDs. Sources said the alleged plan is linked to the terrorist group’s attempts to take revenge for the February 6 explosion at a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Central agencies and Delhi Police units are maintaining close coordination and surveillance has been intensified by monitoring CCTV cameras, checking vehicles and deploying additional personnel at vulnerable spots. They added that bomb disposal teams, dog teams and rapid response teams have also been put on standby at strategic locations.

This alert comes against the backdrop of the deadly car explosion near the historic Red Fort on November 10, 2025, which killed at least 13 people and injured more than 20 others. The blast occurred when a car loaded with explosives exploded near Gate No. 1 of Red Fort Metro station, igniting several nearby vehicles and causing panic in the densely populated area.

Security agencies urged people to be vigilant and immediately report any suspicious objects or activities to the police or emergency services. However, officials said there was no reason to panic and that the measures were precautionary in nature.

An official said further intelligence gathering and verification of inputs are underway.
