SYBO, the studio behind the long-running mobile hit Subway Surfers, has confirmed a February global release for Subway Surfers City, marking the first full sequel to the franchise since its debut more than a decade ago. The new title is set to roll out worldwide on February 26 for iOS and Android devices, with pre-registration opening this week.
The game expands the familiar endless-runner format into a broader animated setting known as Subway City, adding new mechanics, modes and playable environments while retaining the fast-paced chase that made the original one of the most downloaded mobile games of all time. Subway Surfers City will be available as a free-to-play release with optional in-app purchases.
SYBO said the sequel is designed as a long-term platform, with fresh content planned for every season, including new districts, characters and customization options.
Expanded City Environment
Unlike the original game’s single-track layout, Subway Surfers City introduces four distinct districts at launch — The Docks, Southline, Sunrise Boulevard and Delorean Park. Each area features unique visuals, routes and challenges, offering players multiple paths and objectives as they progress through the city.
Developers say additional neighborhoods will be added in future updates, gradually expanding the game world beyond its initial release footprint.
New Gameplay Mechanics and Modes
Subway Surfers City adds several mechanics not seen in the original title, including speed pads that accelerate runs, a stomp move that reveals hidden advantages, and a shield system that enhances jumping ability.
Players will be able to choose between three gameplay modes. Classic Endless returns the familiar high-score chase, while City Tour introduces level-based objectives tied to exploration and missions. A rotating Events mode will offer time-limited challenges and special runs.
Franchise Scale and Player Base
First launched in 2012, Subway Surfers has grown into one of the most successful mobile games globally. As of 2025, the franchise has surpassed 4.5 billion lifetime downloads and built an online following of more than 30 million users across social platforms, according to the developers.
SYBO executives say the sequel reflects both the scale of the brand and changing player expectations in mobile gaming.
Developer Statement
SYBO chief executive Mathias Gredal Nørvig said the new release represents the next phase of the franchise, blending familiar characters with new mechanics and environments. He noted that Subway Surfers City aims to give players more ways to interact with the universe while keeping the core experience accessible.
Subway Surfers City will launch simultaneously across major app stores, with seasonal updates scheduled to follow throughout the year. SYBO has indicated further announcements on upcoming content will be made closer to release.
