On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas’s 27th anniversary, the family of Avneesh Yadav, a resident of Dalil Tola village in Sitabediyara on the border of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, said he was martyred on September 4, 1999, during the Kargil conflict while defending the country.

His mother, Somaru Devi, told PTI on Sunday that despite 26 years, the promises she made after her son’s sacrifice have not been fulfilled.

She added that a statue of the martyr was not erected in the village, nor was a government hospital or primary school named after him, as they promised.

His father Shivji Yadav, who retired from the CRPF, said Avnish joined the army at the age of 18 and made the ultimate sacrifice after neutralizing 20 Pakistani soldiers.

He said that while the central government had allocated a petrol pump to Avneesh’s widow, other assurances given to the family and the village were yet to materialise.

“Big promises have been made to transform the village. Forget changing its condition, today no one comes to inquire about our welfare,” Shivji Yadav said.

When contacted, Bairia SDM Shashi Mani Nath Mishra said that he recently took charge after being transferred from Banda, and he is looking into the matter.

He added, “The necessary measures will be taken to implement the guarantees provided by the government after verifying the details.”

Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorates the climax of Operation Vijay, the name given to the Indian military operation to reclaim the Kargil Heights after the Pakistani infiltration, which culminated on this day in 1999.
