A 19-year-old woman was gang-raped by three men when she went to a local tourist spot in Uttar Pradesh’s Chitrakoot district with a 17-year-old friend, police said on Thursday.

The woman, who was studying for the NEET medical entrance exam, was from Satna district in Madhya Pradesh and was preparing for the exam at the coaching center in Kota in Rajasthan. She came to Chitrakoot about a week ago and was staying with her relatives.
The incident happened on Wednesday when she went to Devangana Valley with her friend.
Police Inspector Arun Kumar Singh said the two were walking after parking their motorcycle when three men followed them into the forest area. They surrounded the two, assaulted them, and took turns raping the woman.
“The accused allegedly raped the girl, demanded money and threatened her before fleeing. The survivor was later sent for a medical examination,” Singh said.
Local police received information about the crime on Wednesday afternoon.
A police response vehicle reached the spot, followed by the district officer and head of Pahilpurwa police station.
A team including additional SP and cyber cell officers has been deployed for the investigation. An FIR was registered under Section 70 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (gang rape) and two suspects were detained for interrogation.
