51 films compete for the Heart of Sarajevo awards at the Bosnian Film Festival.
The collection, released on Thursday, spans four competition selections: a feature film, a feature film and a short documentary, a short narrative film and a student short film. Of these, 21 will have their world premiere at the August event. One will be excluded from the competition.
“At a time when films are more accessible than ever, the value of a film festival is not in making films available, but in bringing them back into public life,” said Izetta Gradjevic, creative director of the Sarajevo Film Festival, whose selection team viewed 1,215 films ahead of the festival.
She continued: “For more than three decades, the Sarajevo Film Festival has gained the trust of an audience that is ready to embrace films that it might never have chosen on its own. This audience does not come to the cinema seeking to confirm its own taste, but for the thrill of discovering a different perspective on the world.” “We have chosen this year’s programs for this audience. They reflect the vitality and diversity of contemporary cinema in South-Eastern Europe. Each film speaks with its own distinct cinematic voice, yet they all share in common the search for a different perspective on reality.”
European Film Academy director Matthijs Wouter Knoll and Yorgos Lanthimos Athena producer Rachel Tsangari are among the industry professionals selected to join British star Emily Watson on the Sarajevo Film Festival jury.
Watson will also receive the Heart of Sarajevo Medal of Honor, along with Iranian director Asghar Farhadi.
