It has been more than two decades since one of Bollywood’s top stars, Mahmood Ali, left for his heavenly abode. Remembering the great artist on the occasion of his death anniversary, his nephew Akkar Ali said: “22 years have passed since his passing, but his spirit lives on.”

Akar Ali shares his fondest memories of his late uncle Mahmoud Ali
Speaking to us exclusively, Akar shared, “I have vivid memories of bidding him farewell that day at Mehboob Studio in Bandra. My father, Anwar Ali, played a dual role in his brother’s life, as a younger brother and as his best friend. Both these relationships came with a lot of passion and responsibility.”
I witnessed many of these encounters between them, which were ridiculously childish. Through observation, I can communicate.
“As he continued, Ali revealed a specific memory, when Mahmoud came from America and brought him a special gift. “It was his wooden tennis racket, an old racket that was about 20 years old. At that time, I was playing on the competitive circuit and playing tennis professionally. When I look back, my heart is filled with gratitude that he enabled my passion for the sport at that time and continues to do so now through film,” Akar recalls.

Like millions of Mehmood’s fans, Akar Ali also loves watching his uncle’s work on screen. He said, “His performance was so unpredictable that you would think you would be on the edge of your seat. It was never a dull moment with Mehmood. His films are evergreen even today. Many of them are celebrated at family gatherings. My friends and I enjoy ‘From Bombay to Goa’ more as it takes us into a world of its own.”
“He continued, “Even today, it is the sweetest escape. You travel through the lens and become a passenger on a bus. It is an unforgettable journey, and that is something special for me. Be it a single frame or an entire film, he left his mark. His performances always added value to the film as a whole. He showed range and depth through his work and always kept it interesting for the audience.”Highlighting his other performances, Akar shared, “Right from Ramesh in ‘Parvaresh’ to Mahesh Wheelbarrow In “Kunwara Baap”, I am inspired by its diversity. My personal favorites are quite a few. until Either way In my father Anwar Ali’s film “Khud Dar”, “Where He Goes”Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!“She has a special place in my heart.”
Moving forward with Mahmoud Ali’s legacy
Our conversation ended on a note – how Akar Ali plans to carry forward his uncle’s legacy. He shared a very helpful answer,”Badi chacha The legacy is unparalleled. She doesn’t need me.”“Through my efforts, I will carve my own path. Bahijan has always been, and always will be. It is a once in a lifetime experience being the son of Anwar and Mona. My parents are my source of gratitude. Through the ups and downs, we have each other; through those here and those who live in the spirit. Bahijan’s legacy is a mentor to me and many others. His legacy is – no one carries it, just to celebrate. The world, he was the king of comedy, and for me he is my spiritual strength.”
I feel his presence through love, joy and devotion.
