Paul Wesley, the famous actor who played Stefan Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries, spoke about his cat-and-mouse relationship with star Nina Dobrev. While they played a pre-determined on-screen couple that fans like to call “Stelena,” off-screen the couple had a tense relationship.
In hindsight, the 43-year-old admitted that his angry behavior may have contributed to their bond.

Paul Wesley took charge of the tension-filled relationship between him and Nina Dobrev from the beginning. “I’m going to take a lot of responsibility for being a bit curmudgeonly and grumpy, a pain in the a**,” he said during a podcast interview on Call Her Daddy with Alex Cooper, before adding: “I was like, ‘I take my acting seriously.’
While there was never any hatred between them, intense conflicts remained in their presence. As for the other cast members, they were all “quiet.”“It was nine other guys and me,” Wesley recalls of the audition round before signing on to the beloved series. “I remember all these guys were kind of kissing her ass,” he added. “I was like, ‘I’m not going to look at her.’ I won’t even acknowledge her because I want to meet her in the audition. ”
I want to meet her for the first time at the audition. “Because our scene was us meeting for the first time.”Despite his bubbly demeanor, the chemistry between the two drove the series popular for years. “We were these two characters, and it was magical. So no matter how much we didn’t get along, it somehow worked out,” he said, adding that their private feud never interfered with their careers.

When Nina Dobrev said goodbye to the series after Season 6, Paul Wesley joked that she would miss him. He said to her, “You know, Nina? You’re going to miss me one day,” and she said, “Maybe.” When the cast reunited for the series finale in 2016, Nina admitted to him that she really missed his presence – and so did Wesley. The famous duo are set to star together again in the suspense novel adaptation You Deserve to Know.
