After back-to-back defeats in Ireland and England, the struggling T20 side led by Shreyas Iyer will look to regain confidence in the 3-match series against Zimbabwe.The last time India faced Zimbabwe in a T20I, it was on February 26 in a must-win encounter in the 2026 T20 World Cup in Chennai.
After suffering a crushing defeat to South Africa that left their campaign hanging by a thread, India responded in style, thrashing Zimbabwe by 72 runs before going on to retain the World Cup title.
More than five months later, the two sides meet again under vastly different circumstances. India arrive in Harare on the back of back-to-back T20I series defeats in Ireland and England, with new skipper Shreyas Iyer still searching for his maiden win.
The three-match series, which begins on Thursday, gives the world champions an opportunity to halt their decline and regain confidence.Having lost six of his first seven matches as T20I captain, Iyer knows results need to turn around quickly.“We’ve been through a difficult phase in England, but there have been a lot of positives. We understood what we needed to build as a team going forward and the kind of awareness and adaptability that is required at this level,” Eyre said on Wednesday.
Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will once again be in the spotlight. Harare is where the 15-year-old announced himself on the world stage with a stunning 175 off 80 balls against England in the Under-19 World Cup final in January. His opening partner Abhishek Sharma also has happy memories here, having scored his maiden T20I hundred at the ground in 2024.However, Sooryavanshi enters the series under the microscope after a difficult debut tour in England, where scores of 14, 13 and 15 highlighted his struggles against quality pacers, particularly Jofra Archer.
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza urged patience with the youngster.“If a 15-year-old is playing international cricket, criticizing him after two or three matches is not justified. Vaibhav is a very talented cricketer and can become a generational talent if managed well,” Raza said.The series is important for many Indian players looking to revive their T20 careers. Vice-captain Tilak Varma will be keen to rediscover his form after disappointing comebacks in Ireland and England, while Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh, who have returned to the line-up, will look to consolidate their positions.
India’s revamped attack, which includes Prince Yadav, the returning Mayank Yadav, Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur, will also be under the microscope. Meanwhile, leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi is hoping to solve his off-ball issues off the back foot while working with his bowling coach for this series, former India left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi.Zimbabwe enter the competition with confidence after recent victories over Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, as well as a memorable 23-run upset of Australia in the 2026 T20 World Cup. With the experienced Raza and quick-hitting Blessing Muzarabane and Richard Ngarava able to take advantage of their home conditions, the hosts will fancy their chance of testing an out-of-form Indian side.Raza believes India’s very aggressive approach could create opportunities for Zimbabwe to pull off another upset. But for India, the priority is simple. Stop the slide and start winning again.
