In the first terror attack since the killing of 26 civilians in Pahalgam last year, a police officer deployed on security duty Amarnath Yatra was killed by a lone terrorist in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag on Wednesday.
The attack on the policeman took place around 12:30 pm at Lal Chowk in Anantnag, officials said.
Following the killing of the police official, a large-scale anti-terrorism operation was launched in the area, along with the arrest of dozens of suspected above ground workers (OGWs).

Who is Ashiq Hussain Qureshi?
Head Constable Ashiq Hussain was part of 3rd IR Battalion and was posted on security duty at the Amarnath Yatra.
Hussain, a resident of Berwah in Budgam, was seriously injured after being shot and was rushed to Government Medical College Hospital, Anantnag.
HT reported earlier that doctors declared Hussain dead on arrival.
Politicians praise
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the attack and expressed his condolences over the killing of the policeman.
“HC Hussain made the ultimate sacrifice in a cowardly terrorist attack in Anantnag district of south Kashmir. I unequivocally condemn this attack and send my heartfelt condolences to his family members. May God rest his soul in the highest abode in Jannat,” Abdullah said.
Paying tribute to Qureshi, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
