Agartala: Tripura Police will conduct a forensic analysis of all electronic tools used by DGP Anurag Dhankar in connection with its investigation into the death of the police officer, an official said on Wednesday.
Dhankar, a 1994 batch IPS officer, was found hanging in the bathroom of his room at the state police headquarters here on Monday.
“A case of unnatural death has been registered and we have already started investigation. As part of the investigation, all electronic gadgets, including mobile phone, laptop and PC, belonging to the DGSP have been seized and will be sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory, Narsingarh for analysis,” investigating officer Subrajit Deb told PTI.
He said that a forensic analysis of the electronic devices would take at least a month and a half.
“If the autopsy report confirms that the Director General of Police died by suicide, we have to shift focus to finding the reasons that prompted him to take this extreme step,” the investigating officer said.
In a complaint, Assistant Inspector General of Police at the headquarters, Prabir Majumder, said he waited a long time to meet the Director General of Police on Monday but could not.
“The DGP asked the staff not to allow any visitor to enter his room till 11 am on Monday. When Majumdar wanted to meet the DGP that day, the staff did not allow him to do so.
“When the DGP did not return to his chair after a long time, the staff entered his room and found the bathroom locked from inside. They broke down the door and found the DGP hanging on a ventilator,” another officer said, citing the complaint.
Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Jitendra Chaudhary, on Tuesday reiterated the demand for a judicial inquiry into the alleged suicide of the DG of the Democratic Party.
“It is unbelievable that a senior police officer, who had gone through many difficult situations in his career, committed suicide without any major reason. I knew that the Directorate General of Police was mentally stressed. Once again, I urge the government to order a judicial inquiry to uncover the truth,” the Communist Party of India (CPI) leader said in a video.
Somik Deb, senior advocate of the Tripura High Court, appealed to people to approach the court to take the matter on their own.
“At first glance, it appears that the General Directorate of Public Security died by suicide. Therefore, the question will automatically arise: What prompted the General Directorate of Public Security to take this extreme step? All cases must be investigated,” he said.
Dhankar’s body was flown to Delhi by air ambulance on Tuesday, an official said.
His last rites are scheduled to be held at his village Barot in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.
