Trainee police officer M Uday Krishna Reddy, who was admitted to hospital on Monday after an alleged suicide attempt, did not consume any toxic substance, doctors said on Tuesday, a day after he was booked on charges of sexually harassing his fellow IPS probationer at the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Police Academy in Hyderabad.
Dr Ravi Shankar Reddy of Jayanthi Hospital, where the trainee officer is undergoing treatment, said medical tests did not find any traces of poison in his body. Blood tests showed only alcohol.
“We believe he lost consciousness because he did not eat food and consumed alcohol beyond the permissible limit. There is no poison anywhere in his body. Blood tests indicate only alcohol,” Ravi Shankar Reddy told reporters.
He said that Uday Krishna Reddy was under observation in the intensive care unit, and was conscious and able to communicate with doctors.
He said: “Our medical team is constantly monitoring his vital signs. All required tests and treatments are being performed, and a multidisciplinary medical team is supervising his care around the clock.”
The doctor added that the trainee officer is expected to be discharged from the hospital on Wednesday morning if his recovery continues without complications.
According to the treating doctor, Uday Krishna Reddy denied attempting suicide after regaining consciousness.
The doctor said: “He complained of throat pain and difficulty swallowing. When he regained consciousness, we spoke to him. He told us that he did not attempt suicide. He said that perhaps something had happened to him while he was under the influence of alcohol.”
Meanwhile, Attapur police, which are investigating the case, recovered an alleged suicide note from Uday Krishna Reddy on Monday morning.
In the note, the authenticity of which HT could not independently verify, the trainee IPS officer claimed that he was in a romantic relationship with a fellow IPS probationer who accused him of sexual harassment and allegedly insisted on continuing their intimate relationship even after her marriage.
He also claimed that the woman forcefully entered his room despite his objections, and claimed that they continued a physical and emotional relationship after her marriage.
He also claimed that the complaint was filed after her friends instigated her and demanded action against the woman, her husband and two others.
A police official, who requested anonymity, said, “The allegations are under investigation and further legal action will be taken based on the evidence collected.”
However, Ravi Shankar Reddy said that Uday Krishna Reddy claimed that he did not remember writing the alleged suicide note.
The doctor added: “He told us that he did not remember writing the suicide note. Since he was suffering from severe psychological pressure, he probably wrote the letter while drunk.”
