Sonam Wangchuk is still receiving comprehensive medical care at VMMC Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital, the medical facility said Monday in its health bulletin for the activist, adding that his vital signs remain stable.
Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike in Jantar Mantar for nearly a month over alleged screening irregularities, was recovered from the protest site and taken to Safdarjung Hospital early Saturday morning after medical experts and the Delhi High Court advised that he be hospitalized immediately due to deteriorating health condition, police said. “Blood parameters continue to require close clinical monitoring. Mr. Wangchuk remains under continuous medical management and close supervision by a multidisciplinary team of experts,” the bulletin said.
“Based on the clinical assessment of the treatment teams from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, New Delhi, continuous medical intervention and uninterrupted clinical monitoring remain essential to ensure early detection and timely management of any potential complications. He is receiving all the required medical care, and his clinical condition continues to be closely monitored by a multidisciplinary team of experts.”
Wangchuk has been on a hunger strike since June 28 as part of a protest organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the examination system.
The RJD has been protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi since June 20. The protest emerged in May a day after remarks attributed to Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, made during a hearing on granting the title of “senior” to lawyers.
The ICJ allegedly referred to “youth” as “cockroaches” and “parasites.” He later explained that he had been misquoted and that the statements were directed at individuals entering the legal profession “with fictitious and fraudulent degrees.”
Meanwhile, Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, moved the Delhi High Court bench against a single-judge bench order refusing to allow her to shift him from Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital to a private hospital. Her petition was expected to be mentioned before a bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia at 10:30 am, for urgent listing on Monday.
Justice Minnie Pushkarna, in a special session on Sunday, refused to immediately allow Angmuthu to transfer Wangchuk to a private hospital, observing that the government’s decision to admit him to Safdarjung Hospital had been taken in light of his medical condition and could not be termed “arbitrary”.
