England opener Ben Duckett has entered the record books for an unwanted reason after becoming the first England batsman to be dismissed off the first ball of the innings against India in the One-Day Internationals. Jasprit Bumrah needed just one delivery to provide India with the perfect start in England’s chase of 234 in the second ODI at Sofia Gardens on Thursday.
Bowling over the wicket, Bumrah hit a good length angled delivery through the left-handed Duckett. Seeking to fumble the ball outside the off-stump, the opener pushed it away from his body and could only tip it behind wicket-keeper Ishan Kishan, who completed the straight catch. The dismissal continued Bumrah’s dominance over Duckett in the series.
In the ODI, the England opener was repeatedly troubled by the Indian pace as deliveries constantly beat his outside edge, although he managed to stay alive on that occasion. But in Cardiff, Bumrah needed just one ball to end his innings. Earlier, India were bowled out for 233 under par in 44 overs after suffering a dramatic collapse in the middle order.

England’s pace attack, led by Jofra Archer’s fiery spell of 3 for 47, saw India collapse as the visitors lost four wickets for just 15 runs in the space of 26 deliveries. Saqib Mahmood took two wickets, while Jos Atkinson finished with three wickets as India squandered a promising stand. Needing 234 runs for victory, England got off to the worst possible start as Bumrah scored immediately, giving India early momentum and leaving Duckett with an unwanted place in the record books.
